Event Description

From The Garden Island:

LIHU‘E — A multi-media exhibit (including video link) opened at the KSA gallery, Kukui Grove Center this week, in honor of passing the 19th Amendment 100 years ago, giving women the right to vote. The exhibit features women of leadership and courage along with curated art works reflecting this momentous occasion.  Elliot Lucas of the Kaua‘i Film Academy has been working out the final edits for a video of the exhibit with a piece that provides interviews of six local personalities on the lives of women of leadership and courage. The collaborative exhibit is open for viewing through Aug. 23rd from noon until 4 p.m. and during special hours of noon until 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 18th. According to Fujimoto’s article Lucas said, “We had this vision back before the COVID-19 pandemic …this is a very good exhibit for young people to take in,” … it offers motivation and inspiration for the causes (women are) advocating for, today. Curated artworks in support of this theme include a piece by Licia McDonald that is available as a set of 19 symbols of women, along with the amendments leading to the ratification of the 19th Amendment. Sale of these pieces benefit the YWCA of Kaua‘i. There is no admission to view the exhibit. Donations benefiting the Kaua‘i Society of Artists are welcome.

The AAUW Kaua‘i, the Girl Scouts of Ha-wai‘i, the Mokihana Club, the YWCA of Kaua‘i, and the Zonta Clubs of Kaua‘i, and Ha-nalei will be available to dis-cuss their roles in supporting and assisting women during the special . These representatives will be avail-able from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m on the 18th., and may be joined by some of the creators of the curated art show.
