Event Description

HIMELE (Hawaii Institute for Music Enrichment and learning Experiences) in association with Ke Kula Mele Hawaii School of Hawaiian Music is bringing back the 6th Annual Kauai Steel Guitar Festival with concerts and jam sessions on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, March 31 – April 22, at the Sheraton Coconut Beach Resort. This festival is be presented in the days preceding the annual Aloha Music Camp as an extension of the Hawaiian Steel Guitar experience that is offered at the camp. There is no charge to the public.

In addition to the steel guitar performances by Hawaiian steel guitar masters, the festival will include workshops, kanikapila jam sessions for play-along or listening enjoyment, and open stage sessions where amateur Hawaiian Steel Guitarists can present their own programs to festival guests.

A festival kickoff Kanikapila jam session will be held on Thursday evening, March 31, 2022 in the courtyard. Festival musicians, NextGen steel guitarists and members of the Ke Kula Mele Hawai’i ensemble will be joined by guest performers for a fun evening. The public is invited to play and sing along.

A vintage steel guitar exhibit will be presented throughout the festival.

Evening activities include Friday workshops and Saturday’s main Ho’olaule’a program beginning at noon. Saturday’s main programs will be livestreamed as a Hawaiian Steel Guitar Showcase event.

Public Kanikapila jam sessions will follow each day’s main activities. Jam sessions are open to anyone and may include steel guitar masters and other musicians. Anyone invited to participate and play along with the featured players and festival guest musicians.
