I’ll be honest, I was a skeptic when it came to Kauai. I got married in Maui, Hawaii, over 20 years ago, and ever since, I’ve dreamed of going back. I never understood why people would ask, “What other islands have you been to?” My response was always the same: Why would I need to visit another Hawaiian island when Maui has it all?
Fast-forward to 2025, and I found myself planning an unexpected trip to Kauai — a place I never imagined visiting. But when an opportunity like that comes your way, you don’t hesitate. You say yes.
Now, a week after returning home, I find myself reflecting — and rethinking everything I thought I knew about the Hawaiian Islands. Yes, I left a piece of my heart in Maui two decades ago. However, after experiencing the quiet magic of Kauai, I’m convinced: Kauai is the best Hawaiian island.
Unless you’re lucky enough to be a frequent visitor to the Hawaiian Islands — able to sample different towns and resorts — choosing where to stay can be a big decision. It can absolutely make or break your trip. For me, Kapa‘a Town, centrally located on Kauai’s east coast, turned out to be the perfect home base.
I stayed at the Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach Resort. This smaller, boutique-style oceanfront resort has consistently good reviews. It’s also conveniently situated in Kapa’a, near shopping, restaurants, and plenty of things to do. When I arrived at the resort, I was genuinely impressed.
