Event Description

Join in on a day of malama ‘aina (caring for the land) and education near Opaeka‘a Falls up the Wailua River on Kuamoo Road from 8:30 am to 2 pm.

Hihiakalahau is formerly known as the Ancient Kamokila Hawaiian Village and is situated up the Wailua River across from Opaeka‘a Falls.

Be at the bottom of the access road between 8 and 8:15 a.m. to witness protocol ceremonies at 8:30 a.m. Work begins after that.

From 7:30–8:00 a.m. Parking will be available either down at the bottom where Hihiakalahu is located; along the access road (going up or down), or at Poliahu Heiau across from Opaeka‘ Falls.

For those who park along the access road, we’ll have a UTV and shuttle running up and down. For anyone parking at Poliahu, there will also be a shuttle going back and forth—though some people choose to walk.

Bring water, sunscreen, garden gloves and wear shoes. A hat is also recommended. For more information: Pihana Ka Ikena, email — contact@pihanakaikena.org

From Poliahu Heiau at the top, there are  commanding views makai (seaward) to Wailua Bay and mauka (inland) to the ridges of Nounouand Kälepa and the peak called ‘A‘ähoaka. This is one of seven heiau recorded along the Wailua River.
