Event Description

January is mu’umu’u  month in Hawai‘i.  On Kaua‘i, this celebration largely surrounds a Mu’umu’u Paina Luncheon at Smith’s Tropical Paradise, presented by the Kaua‘i Historical Society. There will be a luncheon, stories and entertainment highlighting Hawaiian fashion, culture and community.

This year, organizers are collaborating with the iconic Native Hawaiian brand Manuhealiʻi. Owners Danene and Pono Lunn have preserved and elevated aloha wear traditions for over 40 years. Featured throughout the event will be their beloved Queen Emma Quilt designs, inspired by a moʻolelo (story, tale, myth, history, tradition, literature, legend) that Danene learned as a student at St. Andrew’s Priory—sharing Queen Emma’s time on Kauaʻi and reflection of Manuhealiʻi’s deep connection to Kauaʻi–Niʻihau.

This event includes:

  • A full luncheon buffet featuring island flavors
  • Live Hawaiian music throughout the afternoon
  • A thoughtfully curated silent auction
  • ʻOhana Niʻihau, sharing their handcrafted pūpū jewelry
  • A joyful afternoon in a lush garden setting celebrating Aloha
