Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge will be hosting a World Ocean Day celebration on June 6th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (gates close at 3:30 p.m.)
The celebration includes a public “viewing” of the 85-foot long mosaic mural, created by artist Kathleen Ho and the Garden Island Arts Council.
Thomas Daubert, the executive director of the Friends of Kauai Wildlife Refuges, said, “The mural is already up, with the installation progressing. Coupled with two educational signs at both ends of the mural. It looks amazing.”
Kathleen Ho, the artist, said “It’s a 3,000-pound baby, made up of 16 panels and labeled ‘Ka Pae ‘Aina O Hawaii‘ Nei,’ or the birth of an archipelago.” Attendees will have an opportunity to meet Ho in person to learn more about the mural’s creation.
Additionally, Kumu Kehaulani, who will bless the completed installation in a private ceremony, will have her hula halau present to offer hula performances.
Other activities planned include the Junior Ranger Biologist program and keiki ocean craft.
Due to limited parking available, at the refuge, advance reservations are necessary. Online reservations are available at www.Recreation. gov/tickets/facility/ 300018
Partner organizations — including the Friends of Kauai Wildlife Refuges, the Pacific Rim Conservation, Save Our Shearwaters and the Surfrider Foundation — will have tables and exhibits to enhance the day’s experience.
There is no cost to attend.
