Blue Dolphin Charters was founded July 3, 1995, by longtime waterman Terry Donnelly.

It has since grown during the past three decades from a single-boat operation into an award-winning leader in marine tourism, offering journeys along the Garden Isle’s world-famous Nā Pali Coast and “The Forbidden Island” of Niʻihau.

“When I started Blue Dolphin Charters 30 years ago, I wanted to share the beauty of Kaua‘i’s ocean and coastline in a way that was respectful to the land, sea and culture,” Donnelly said in the company’s 30th anniversary announcement. “It’s been incredibly rewarding to watch it grow and to see generations of families come back year after year.”

The company focuses on safety, hospitality and environmental responsibility.

Its tours — which depart from Port Allen — offer a variety of activities, from morning snorkel trips to the Nā Pali Coast and sunset cruises to voyages to Ni‘ihau and Lehua Crater as well as a rafting adventure.

“Watching families, honeymooners and adventurers marvel at humpback whales, spinner dolphins and colorful reefs — and knowing we played a part — has been the greatest reward,” Donnelly said.

Shaye Clarke has been at the company’s helm as general manager for the past 8 years. She continues the legacy of Blue Dolphin Charters, with a focus on guest experience, marine education, community partnerships and sustainable practices.

“Our team is passionate about what we do — whether it’s navigating sea caves, spotting dolphins or watching the joy on a guest’s face during their first whale sighting,” Clarke said in the anniversary announcement. “That’s the heart of what makes Blue Dolphin Charters so special.”

With a reputation for safety, aloha and unforgettable experiences, Blue Dolphin Charters continues to lead the way in ocean-based adventures on Kaua‘i.
