KAPAA — Foodies, rejoice! The latest version of Tasting Kauai: Restaurants 2015 –
Insider’s Guide to Eating Well on the Garden Island has been released, in anticipation of the approaching holidays. Kapaa-based author, Marta Lane, demonstrates her passion for sustainable agriculture and applauds those who work hard to source fresh, local food and highlights those who are dedicated to real Kauai cuisine — from food trucks to the finest dining rooms.
“I’m really excited about the second edition of our restaurant guidebook,” says Lane. “There is so much great food on Kauai, which is made by hand with local ingredients, and I’m thrilled to be able to share my favorites.” Professional photographer and husband, Daniel Lane, also extensively illustrates the 150-page book with his images.
Lane clarifies in the book’s introduction, “As a full-time food writer, many people think of me as a food critic. But I like to call myself a food profiler. Instead of focusing on what’s wrong, I choose to focus on what’s right.”
The expanded and updated book is meatier than the last, and includes a number of new additions, pleasing to fine diners, sustainable food enthusiasts or those simply looking for a great lunch. There are 30 new listings, for a total of 93, an introduction to the Hawaiian language, a new category for eateries in located in Kauai’s Central zone, and a glossary of Hawaiian food.
A series of cocktail parties will be held around the island to celebrate the book’s launch, between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Readers will have a chance to meet the author and photographer, as well as some of the island’s top chefs, at the events.
“We want to include residents, as they have told me they really appreciate the first edition,” Lane said. “I know it’s tricky for folks to go to a different part of the island, so we are coming to them.” Parties are scheduled for 5 to 6:30 p.m. in Lihue on November 28th, at The Feral Pig; in Hanalei at Tiki Iniki on December 5th; in Kapaa at Hukilau Lanai on December 10th, and in Poipu at Josselin’s Tapas Bar and Grill on December 19th. Tickets are $35, which includes an autographed copy of the book as well as pupus and a celebratory cocktail. Reservations are required and must be made onlne at TastingKauai.com.
