Participate as a volunteer in NOAA’s annual Sanctuary Ocean Count, a shore-based humpback whale monitoring project to count whale sightings. The count is held annually on the last Saturday of January, February, and March, at 15 designated locations around Kauai. On the Royal Coconut Coast, go to the Kapaa Look-out, just beyond the end of Kapaa town. Bring a beach chair, water, sunscreen and hat. Online registration is required and found at oceancount.org. The count begins promptly at 8 a.m. and lasts until noon.
