Resorts and Kauai Food Bank Feed Furloughed Staff

A number of Kauai’s hotels and condominium resorts are working with the Kauai Independent Food Bank (KIFB) and several other organizations to distribute meals to furloughed workers. Most are laid off until Hawaii re-opens to visitors. On the Royal Coconut Coast, Pono Kai Resort,  The ISO, Mokihana, Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach, Kauai Shores, Hilton Garden Inn and Kaha Lani have recently received hundreds of meals. Planned distributions are coming up for Outrigger Waipouli Beach Resort, Plantation Hale, Islander on the Beach and Kauai Coast Resort at the Beachboy.

Each package typically contain rice, cream of mushroom and chicken noodle soups, hamburger, fresh vegetables and other staples some of which has been donated by Sysco Hawai‘i, Kaua‘i, formerly known as Hawaiian Flour Mill Food Service.

“The hotel and resort industry has done so much to support the Kauai Food Bank over the years, this is something we can do right now for the large amount of workers who are struggling to make ends meet,” says Kelvin Moniz, Executive Director of the KIFB.

The overwhelming response by resort general managers and working staff is joy in seeing their employees who drive by to pick up food boxes. “We miss you, we love you,” said Sady Riggan, a staff member helping to distribute food at the Hilton.
